Edith Roman Associates

This site bills itself as "your comprehensive online access guide to the names and addresses of virtually every sought-after direct response prospect in the United States today." List broker and manager Edith Roman offers a search engine with access to tens of thousands of mailing lists worldwide. Register, and you will then be able to conduct your own list searches to get an idea of how many are in your target market, and how much it will cost to reach them. Direct marketers won't want to miss Edith Roman's set of freebie calculators: one figures the ROI on a mailing, one helps determine how many pieces to send out, and another computes the benefits of an NCOA (National Change of Address) update on your list. Consulting services are available to assist in your direct marketing and list rental efforts.

Experian BizInsight

Experian BizInsight is an online B2B prospecting tool for small business owners. Their National Business Database puts 15 million US businesses at your fingertips. Using an online list segmentation tool called List Link, you can delve through data and target away by multiple parameters to build your perfect list. Counts and pricing are available instantaneously, so you can adjust as necessary to meet your spending requirements.

If all that sounds like too much work, you can also rent one of Experian's constantly updated lists (which you can still segment if desired) such as Cottage Industries or Hotline File (a monthly list of new businesses). Experian's credit history data adds another layer of service offerings - for an additional fee, you can cull your list by eliminating prospects who are a high credit risk or who do not meet your credit guidelines. Alternatively, you can target good credit risks on your list and create a segment to which you will offer pre-approved credit or other perks.


Hippo Direct

Hippo Direct is a mailing list broker for both postal and email lists. The very user-friendly site offers a great introduction to list rental and DM tips and tricks. You can search the list database by keyword, or zero in on specific subjects such as email business lists, email consumer lists, ezine sponsorship or industry-specific lists. Click through to the list data cards, or contact Hippo Direct for personalized service. If you're looking for a list, email a description and they'll target lists for you. And be sure to keep ahead of the competition by subscribing to the free HipTips ezine, which is a weekly mailing of new and intriguing lists.

Hoover

You can use Hoover's "Build Company List" or "Build Executive List" tools to generate and download targeted lists of prospects culled from the Hoover's Company Database. You can target using up to 29 different parameters such as location, industry, financial and performance elements, company rank and, for executive lists, salary, position and more.

A subscription to Hoover's Pro Plus is required for complete access, and subscription information is not available online (you must contact a Hoover's representative with all pricing inquiries). However, at the site you can dive into a live sample of the tool, which gives you hands-on experience in slicing and dicing the list to meet your parameters. It's an excellent demonstration of the power of database marketing.


Jay Abraham

For the past 25 years, Jay Abraham has helped businesses of varying sizes really goose up their revenue streams with smarter marketing and by unleashing revenue opportunities the owners never knew they had. He is the author of a contemporary marketing classic which is essential reading for these tough economic times: "Getting Everything You Can Out of All You've Got: 21 Ways You Can Out-Think, Out-Perform, and Out-Earn the Competition." At the time of this writing his invaluable selection of articles and resources on his website was being reorganized; do check to see if you can access this must-read information now.

John Caples International Awards

We searched far and wide for a site devoted to the work of legendary DM man John Caples, but alas, the closest we came was this site which houses the awards program in his name. As one of the legends of Direct Marketing, and author of "Tested Advertising Methods," he was a true DM pioneer. Caples believed in the testing of ads, consistency in copywriting practice and simplicity in advertisements. He introduced the theory, method and mathematical principles of response measurement and was known to dislike humor in ads because, as Caples himself said, "only half of the people in this country have a sense of humor, and clever ads seldom sell anything." To really discover his genius and understand his integral part in the history of DM, you owe it to yourself to read "Tested Advertising Methods." It can be slow going at times, but it's absolutely essential reading.


List Clean Up

Via the site, users can access a wide range of list processing services. Just upload ASCII text delimited database files and they will merge/purge, update addresses and have files CASS-certified to take advantage of postal discounts through bar-coding. Files are returned in as little as three hours. By the way, CASS is a process that standardizes addresses and assigns ZIP+4 to ensure the highest number of deliverable addresses. A dirty list gets a DM demerit. Clean up your act today.
